About Alison West
Alison West, Ph.D, ERYT, is director of Yoga Union and co-director of the Yoga Union Center for Backcare and Scoliosis. She established Yoga Union in 1996 after studying widely and teaching Yoga in NY for ten years, both at the Sivananda center and at Jivamukti. She practiced Astanga Yoga for a number of years, studying in NY with Eddie Stern and in Pune with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. During this time she continued studying Iyengar Yoga for alignment, working in particular with the late Mary Dunn, Kevin Gardiner and Genny Kapuler. Alison has also traveled to Pune to study with the Iyengars. Her first studies at the Sivananda centers of Munich and NY in the early 80′s have led to a life-long interest in Yoga philosophy and the subtle practices of pranayama, meditation, mantra, yantra and mudra. She furthered her meditation studies with TKV Desikachar at a retreat at Colgate University in 1993 and went on to the Shambhala trainings in NYC. Her spiritual teachers include Ramana Maharshi, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj and Ayang Rinpoche.
Alison has formulated Principles of Practice that can be applied to most forms of Hatha Yoga, and brings to her teaching insights born of the ongoing study of anatomy and kinesiology with master teachers such as Irene Dowd, Tom Myers, and Gil Hedley for dissection.
Alison conducts tri-annual 200-hour Three-Pillars of Practice Teacher Trainings and an annual 300-hour Masters Training in New York City, teaches workshops nationwide and in Europe, and group and private classes in Manhattan. Yoga Union’s Teacher Trainings are registered with YA both at the 200 and 500-hour level.
